CNVR

A core pillar of LUNI's mission: humanely managing and protecting the island cat population through sterilisation, vaccination and return.
In warm climates like the Gili Islands, cats breed year-round.

Just one unsterilised female can spawn up to 2,000 new cats in only 16 months. Every sterilisation breaks that chain.

That's why CNVR is one of the most critical things we do.

The humane way to manage cat populations.

CNVR — Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return — is the most effective and compassionate method for managing free-roaming cat populations.

Rather than removing cats from their territory (which creates a vacuum other cats quickly fill), CNVR sterilises and vaccinates cats and returns them to their home range.

Over time, sterilised colonies become stable, healthier, and smaller. Vaccinated cats also act as a buffer against disease spread — protecting both island animals and the community.

CNVR, step by step

Every cat goes through the same careful, humane process — from the moment it's caught to the moment it's returned home.

1

Catch

Cats are caught carefully by hand, trap, or net — the method chosen depends on the cat's temperament and location.

2

Register & transport

Each cat is registered and transported safely to our clinic or pop-up facility for assessment.

3

Neuter & ear-tip

Cats are sedated, sterilised, and their ear is tipped - sign that a cat has been through CNVR. Pain relief and antibiotics are provided.

4

Vaccinate & treat

Cats receive vaccinations, deworming, and any additional treatment needed - fleas, wounds, dental issues - while under sedation.

5

Board & recover

Cats are cared for in our pop-up clinic or facility until they are fully recovered and ready for release.

6

Return

Cats are returned to the exact spot where they were found — their home territory — where they continue to live as part of the managed colony.

Taking CNVR across the islands.

Beyond our permanent clinics on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, we hold pop-up clinics 4–6 times a year across the islands.
Each pop-up also offers a wider range of services alongside TNVR:

Every sterilisation breaks the chain.

CNVR requires clinics, equipment, vets, anaesthesia and aftercare. Your donation directly funds sterilisations that prevent hundreds of kittens from being born into a life on the streets.
