Our vision is that the animals of the Gilli Islands, Lombok, can live happily and healthily in harmony with the community.
LUNI Lombok Indonesia was founded in October 2021 to help the stray cats of the Gili Islands, who were in a desperate situation due to there being no local animal care services.
Throughout the three Gili Islands, unsterilised street cats multiply quickly, increasing the ever-growing problem of (but as yet uncounted) population of feral and stray cats. Most suffer and can die from lack of food and clean drinking water, viral diseases, accidents, and natural calamities. In order to reduce the cats’ suffering, and control the population, LUNI Lombok’s no.1 priority is to sterilise at least 80% of the Gili Islands cats.
LUNI Lombok currently feeds and gives water to around 500-700 hungry cats daily on the island of Gili Trawangan. Its ‘pussy patrol’ also allows the team to identify breeding hot spots and sick cats needing help, interact with the community, and provide locals with some basic animal care education.
Mass vaccination is another priority. There is a huge problem with FPV (feline Panleukopenia and cat flu viruses). The most common medical issues the team sees in cats are abscesses and wounds, ringworm and scabies, cat flu, feline panleukopenia, eye infections, kidney failure, worms and fleas, chicken or fish bones stuck in the mouth, and blood parasites.
As well as cats, the LUNI Lombok team now tries to help as many wildlife and other animals as possible throughout the Gili Islands.
