Our vision is that the animals of the Gilli Islands, Lombok, can live happily and healthily in harmony with the community.
LUNI Lombok aims to help as many animals as it can on the Gili Islands of Indonesia, then hopefully one day expand. Our long-term, overall goals are as follows:
1) Food, water and shelter
Ensure the basic needs of food, water and shelter (as well as a caring eye) are available to every animal that needs them on the three Gili Islands.
2) Sterilisation and vaccination
Get 80% of the population of stray cats on the three Gili Islands sterilised and vaccinated via our permanent clinic as well as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) pop-up clinics.
3) Veterinary care
Ensure that every animal on the three Gili Islands has access to vet care as needed, not just cats, both in our clinic and through our mobile vet work.
4) Rescue and rehabilitation
Rescue, rehabilitate and rehome snakes and other wildlife from the three Gili Islands as needed.
5) Education and support
Increase awareness of and support for LUNI Lombok’s important work through local-led education on animal care, encouraging cat fostering and adoption and building on initiatives such as our Cat Café.
Our story so far…
The Gili Islands is an archipelago of three tiny island triplets (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air) located in Lombok, Indonesia. Superficially, the islands seem to be a paradise for all who live or visit there, but this is not the reality for the animals, who have lacked even basic care. LUNI Lombok was started by Nina Astolfi in October 2021 after moving to Gili Trawangan. Previously Nina created Project LUNI, a registered NGO that helps street cats in Singapore, in 2018 (LUNI stands for Love the Unwanted, Neglected, and Ill-treated animals).
In a very short time, LUNI Lombok has established the first and only veterinary clinic on the Gili Islands, which provides free veterinary care for stray animals and affordable services for owned pets. It employs a full-time local vet and a vet nurse as part of its dedicated team. Vets Beyond Borders also provides LUNI Lombok with vets from around the world who help in regular pop-up TNR clinics, train the local team in veterinary skills, and bring donated equipment such as medical supplies and even a blood analysis machine. As well as the clinic, the Cat Cafe and shop and other fundraising efforts are bringing in much-needed funds mostly from tourists and international donors. LUNI Lombok’s Cat Cafe is a home for rescued kittens and cats, a shop with great cat supplies and gifts and a place to buy delicious food and drinks all at once. Besides addressing the desperate situation for cats in the Gili Islands, LUNI Lombok has begun to help other animals there in various ways too
LUNI Lombok’s vision is that the animals of the Gilli Islands, Lombok, can live happily and healthily in harmony with the community.
Any donation (but please consider a monthly recurring donation) will help us greatly to help the animals through our 5 goals of:
1) Food, water and shelter
2) Sterilisation and vaccination
3) Veterinary care
4) Rescue and rehabilitation
5) Education and support
